WOMEN ONLY!! Women's Hygiene?? Stuff about it?
Ok, usually I get really angry when I'm on my period, because I've been publicly humiliated from it. Yeah, now I can have children, but why do we have to bleed???! Anywho! I am a big fan of the renaissance time, you know, gypsies, pirates, all that stuff. But I was wondering, how did women deal with their periods? I know they used rags, but what if they had to stay home all week to ten days to deal with it? what if they went through a really heavy one, and bled through the rag?? Thank the Lord for 'Always'! And guys, did they think that B.O. smelt good, or sexy? And was there such a thing as lingerie? Or even a bra! Hopefully there was underwear!! And if your like me, I cannot wear boots with a heal without having to visit a chiropractor the next day! How did they deal with PMS, or backpain? And did they spend so much time on their hair, as we do today? And was it legal for them to fight in a war or something like that? JW, LOL Oh! Lotion. How was that invented? If you spent alot of time in the sun, you might get dry skin right? Do you get what I'm saying? I might write a report on how women throughout the ages dealt with their beauty problems. Thanks for the answers!

We have it better today than some women of past centuries. I hear corsets are painful. I believe bras and deodorant were invented in the early 20th century, I'm not sure about lotion in the form we have today. Drugs for pain have always been around in some form or another – opium, hashish, cannabis. There was some kind of narcotic that women took for their 'nerves' in the late 19th century. I can't remember the name of it but it was addictive. Women used rags, some used cotton. I believe the rags were laundered and reused. If all I had were some rags and I was having a heavy period, I would pile on some extra rags. I've used more than one sanitary item at a time. People have always found a way to deal.Edit – the name of the drug they took was laudanumhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laudanum
Why do you think Cinderella runs away when the clock struck midnight, so fast that she looses a high heel shoe? Source(s): Cinderella fairy tale.

You have a lot of interest in times past, and you are right about one thing … it sure was not as easy as it is today!Regarding getting angry when you have your period, that is actually pretty common. It's called PMS and it can be caused by the chemical actions in the body at that time. There are some good medications you can take to feel better, including over-the-counter things such as evening primrose oil. The doc can also prescribe things to help if you feel it getting too out of control. The 'history' of how women dealt with things like periods in 'the old days' is actually recorded online! I have put a link below, it's very interesting how women did all the things they had to without our modern conveniences … amazing really.Enjoy finding out all this stuff!

It was just accepted that people only had a bath once a year or so, if they were lucky, and so everyone smelled extremely bad, all time and wore dirty, soiled clothes, all the time. A lot of people had a lot of horrible diseases and life expectancy was extremely low (like about 35-40, if they were lucky). So a bit of PMS and a bit of menstrual blood would have been neither here nor there. Also, infant mortality rates were extremely high, so women had to have loads of babies for only a couple to survive. With women spending so much of their time either pregnant or nursing, menstruation would have been not such a major part of life.Similar situations still exist today in poorer parts of the world (think Sub-Saharan Africa).
The bleeding that happens during your period is because your body is shedding the lining of your uterus. When you ovulate, you release an egg and if this egg is not fertilized, your body sheds the lining of the uterus and the cycle starts all over again. Women didn't stay home when they had their periods, it was simply a part of life like it is today. They used rags or cotton to absorb the blood. BO never smells good, no matter what time period you live in. Women and men had underwear but it was quite different than what we have today. No, they did not have bras. Appearance was not thought of the same way back then as it is today. It was not as important, especially considering that luxuries like hair spray, make up, etc. weren't around. In many cultures, particularly in Europe, the US, and Canada women were taught to keep as much skin covered at a time as they could. So dry skin and sun damage weren't really an issue.
