Will my parents car insurance go up if I get my driver's license?
I am eighteen years old, I only have an instructional driving permit because my parent's don't have enough money to put me on their insurance. I don't live at home anymore, I live with my boyfriend, I can use his car when I need it (which isn't often). But, can I get my driver's license and not have my parent's insurance go up? I just want a license to have, just in case I need to drive for an emergency, Etc. Is this possible?

Best Answer – Chosen by Voters At 18 years of age, and not living in your parents home, there is no requirement that you be added to your parent's policy. You are considered to be an adult.Seeing as you are going to be driving your boyfriend's car, and you live in the same household, you would have to be added to his policy, but your parents are not involved in any way. They may have an exclusion on their policy that prohibits drivers who are under a certain age, but if you are not driving their car, and not living in their household, your license will not cause a policy change. When you get your license, use your current address, not your parent's home. so you want a license without a car to insure? right? in some states you can get insurance for any driver (reguardless of what they drive), in other states you insure the cars, most insurance will generally cover any driver over 25 with the insured persons permission.since you are under 25, if you drive a car without being on a policy if something were to happen you/the vehicle would not be covered (and could get sued). Just remember if its a real emergency… and you know how to drive safetly…. no one will question why you are driving unless an accident occurs. (an emergency is not oh I overslept and missed the bus.)I got a no insurance ticket in my boyfriends car and it cost me $540 and the car was insured (i wasnt on the insurance, and got pulled over for a break light being out) BE CAREFUL who's car you drive.
Since you are not in your parent's household, their insurance will not be effected if/when you get your license. Your boyfriend's insurance could be effected since his insurance will see you as a potential risk as you have access to his vehicles and you could possibly drive them.Insurance companies ask that you give them the names and license numbers of any licensed drivers in the household, regardless if they have their own insurance or won't drive your vehicles.
Just because you get a license will not cause your parents insurance to go up because you no longer live with them. Reading between the lines here, I will tell you that you cannot be added to your parents car insurance because you don't live with them. If they tell the insurance that you live with them and are added, they will be committing insurance fraud and in the event of an accident, there will be no coverage, their policy will be canceled and they will be in a heap of trouble. Since you are all grown up now, at 18 and living with a "boyfriend", I suggest that you and the "boyfriend" leave your parents out of this take care of this "dilemma" on your own.
Nope, since you are the age of majority, 18, and not living with parents at their address, you will be able to get your own costly insurance policy and not affect theirs whatsoever. If you don't have your own car, you won't need your own policy, but since you are at the same address, to be covered your boyfriend will have to add you to his policy as a secondary driver, which will raise his rates.
If you don't live with your parents, they are not responsible for your driving responsibilities. The best suggestion I have is to be included inyour boy friend's insurance and share the cost of premiums.Depending on your boyfriend's age and driving records, you guys may get a lower rate. When you apply for your license, you will need proof of insurance any way..Good luck to you.Ustun Inan Insurance Source(s): I am an Insurance Agent
Your parents insurance will only go up if they add you to their insurance. If you don't live with them and don't use their vehicle they don't have to add you to their insurance and it won't go up.Of course you can get a license without theirs going up.
The reason why is because you become a higher liability to your parent's insurance company. It would be better to have a chat with someone there person to person and see what your best option would be. Source(s): me
Yes, you'er 18, you're not driving their car. Their car insurance rate has nothing to do with you unless you dive their car and they add you. My parents never added me and I drove their car often.
The only time your parents need to add you to their policy is if your a licensed driver living in their residence or you drive their vehicles consistently. Source(s): Claims Adjuster 17yrs
It only goes up if they add you to their policy. You aren't even living at home anymore. Their insurance wouldn't be affected if you got your license.
You can compare how the insurance quotes would change, for example here – autoinsurance.noneto.com
i think so
There were many cases like yours even posted here where insurers just put the price up, because you "might take the car". Indeed the "emergency" factor did come up more than once.So it seems it varies depending on the insurer. It is a sure thing that many people living with their parents expect to be insured "by default" so that's what some insurers do and there's no way out.
