Which term do you prefer?
I'm black (Jamaican) and in class today we were talking about black history month. (IDK if it matters but i'm the only black person in my class 'cause I live in a white suburban area.) My teacher was asking the class which name out of coloreds, black, and African American they think is most appropriate. Most people said African American because they thought that colored and black focused too much on the color of our skin and they said that it was discriminative. Our teacher said that some black people used to and still don't like the term African American because they think they are not at all related to Africans.
So she asked me what I thought and I said I don't like using any terms because I don't understand why we have to focus on race or color but if I had to pick, I don't like the term coloreds or ***** and besides those two as long as your not lying about my race I don't care which others you choose.
So what do you think? (: For black people: Which one do you feel the most comfortable or uncomfortable with? For everyone else: Which one do you use or feel is most appropriate?

I prefer being called african-american. I also think african-american is the more appropiate term.
African-American is not a great term to use because many ethnic groups are African but they are NOT black. The Amazigh tribes of North Africa are caucasian and genetically similar to Italians. Also, such as in your case, you are a Jamaican-American more so than an African-American because the term generally applies to the American descendants of black slaves. So, African-American is not correct.Coloreds is offensive. Out and out.So, black American is probably the best and most correct term. Even though your skin may not be technically black and could possibly be even lighter than most white people's. It means you can trace origin back to Sub-Saharan Africa. Coloreds gives no indication of ethnic heritage and African-American being used solely to describe black people is very offensive to non-black Africans (as there are European, Caucasian, Arab, and Asian Africans) because you're denying them their heritage.
