Which insurance do I claim for a car break in?
I have had some fishing gear stolen from my car, there was no damage done to the car but I don't know is this stuff (including a camera) covered by house insurance or will it be covered by my car insurance? Many thanks in advance.

Best Answer – Chosen by Voters It's covered by the homeowners policy. However if it's a small amount you may want to think twice about filing the claim as it will normally result in a rate increase.Edit: You should know that your auto insurance doesn not cover personal property inside the vehicle unless it's used by the operating system and even then it can have limts. SO your fishing tackle isn ot used in the car nor is the camera so there would be no claim. As far as the no forced entry, there's not always forced entry to a vehicle. Maybe they got in through a slim jim or maybe you left it unlocked. It may cause the insurance company to ask a few more questions but that would be it. You should file a police report. good luck Source(s): claims adj
The car Insurance only covers a limited anount of personal effects, but only if you are Comprehensive – it's usually £100.House Insurance will cover it if you have 'Personal Effects' cover which covers items outside the home. It also depends on how much your claim is. If you have unspecified item insurance, this usually covers up to about £2000 to £3000, however if it comes to more than that then technically you should have advised your Insurer at renewal that you had a lot of fishing tackle, they would then have 'specified' it.As stated below though – you still have to prove your claim; you said there was no damage to the car. If the car was unlocked then you have contravined your policy by not protecting the goods.Tell your Insurer what has happened, make sure it has been reported to the Police (you will need a crime reference number) and take it from there.
Auto insurance only covers the car itself. If your gear and camera aren't some super, high-end equipment then you will be better off to simply absorb the costs yourself.
Your car insurance wont cover it because they will say you shouldnt have left them in the car unattended. I presume the home insurance will say the same. Source(s): Work in motor claims

You don't have a claim because you cannot prove that the items were stolen.
