   You need to contact a local insurance agent who represents one of the larger companies [like Farmers, Allstate, etc.] and describe what you're going to be doing–picking up an out of state car, etc.–and get an agent name near the location where you'll be picking up the car. You shouldn't drive an uninsured vehicle, no matter what. When you get to NY, contact that agent and give him the VIN no. and any other information he requires, and just get a low-end policy [PL/PD] to cover you until you get back home again. You can get a car insured pending the tag & plate registration, depending on what your state requires. But in the meantime, you're covered with the basics…you can upgrade thru the same company once your home again.

   You need insurance when you recieve the keys. Call an insurance agent Tuesday, I know Nationwise will insure an out of state vehicle. As far as registration of vehicle in Indiana, the vehicle has to be inspected by a State or local police department first before you can get it registered and get Indiana plates. Remember the vehicle must have a "valid" license plate on it to drive legally.
