Thanks Amanda for your stern lecture. You gave no real advice and just made someone feel like chit. Way to go.I have a Black Lab and she also suffers from the same thing you describe. I have never let them get to the point where it's and bleeding. It's natural for some big dogs to get those hard calusses. It's just a question of what to do with them. For me, I just ignore them. If it were to get as bad as you describe I would try new bedding or letting her get a lot more exercise. If that didn't work I would consult my vet and see what he or she had to say. The caluses are caused by constant pressure on that part of the body. Usually a joint or foot. Very common in big dogs. Like I said, try giving her more exercise and new bedding.
Amanda's reply was excellent and very polite. She correctly advised that the dog needs to be treated by a vet (just in case you missed it Bob).If I knew where this dog was I would inform animal control and hopefully they would seize the dog, have him treated by a vet and prosecute your father for animal cruelty. The fines would cost a lot more than vet treatment. Clearly there is a long standing serious infection. There is nothing you can do. This poor dog must be in severe pain. Tell your father to take the dog to the vet before someone sees the condition of this dog and reports him. It's against the law to withold vet treatment from a sick animal.
Amanda is completely right. You've allowed your dog to clearly suffer for 8 years! Has he ever seen a vet? You can not treat this yourself for one main reason, you are not a yet!No, I don't know what his condition is, as also I am not a vet. Take your poor dog to the vet to get the proper care he needs. Also, stop raping his leg..
No, get him to a vet, this poor dog is suffering and from all account's this should have been sorted out before it got this bad.
this sounds very serious i suggest you take him to a vet as soon as possible.he could have something very serious that can be contagious to people and other pet's.
Your father has had a dog with a chronic painful skin condition for 8 years, and the dog has had no vet attention? Do you have any idea how ridiculous and inhumane that is? Has this dog ever actually been to a vet in his life? I have a hard time believing any vet worth anything would let a dog walk out of their office in this condition. Not providing an animal with necessary medical care is inhumane and unlawful. This dog needs to go to the vet (I would think the 8 years of leaking puss and blood from mysterious skin bumps, and finally practically eating his own ankle would make that clear to anyone). He should have gone to the vet 8 years ago when all of this started. How can you take care of this yourself when there is no diagnosis?Bob, I'm not here to pat people on the back for 8 years of neglecting to provide medical care for their dogs, or to make people feel good about themselves for doing so. Nor am I here to tell people it's "normal" for large dogs to spend 8 years leaking blood and puss before finally biting themselves almost to the bone, without any vet care whatsoever, and that all they need is more exercise to put a stop to it. If you don't mind, I'll leave giving that kind of "advice" to you. If you missed it, my advice was to get this clearly suffering dog, biting itself almost to the bone, to the vet for proper care, rather than guess at a diagnosis and trying some half-baked home remedy.
