What causes a car to be more expensive for car insurance?
I need to buy a car but I'm unsure what causes the car insurance to be more expensive, is it based on mileage? Engine specs? Car year?

Best Answer – Chosen by Voters if you have no money and borrow it, that way is the most expensive. Source(s): bubble & squeak
Aside from being based heavily on your demographics, driving habits and credit, it's primarily based on vehicle performance, vehicle weight, vehicle value and the typical person that drives that vehicle.Performance a value should be pretty obvious, if it goes fast, people will drive it fast – and possibly recklessly. Value comes into play when they have to pay to repair your car – expensive parts = expensive insurance.Weight might seem strange at first, but it's actually pretty much common sense. If a guy runs a red light and t-bones another car it makes a big difference for how much damage and possible injury he can cause. For instance, think of a motorcycle, or even a moped running a red light going 40mph and hitting a car. The car and it's occupants are probably doing pretty good. Now think of that guy doing the same thing in a semi-truck.Here's another example, a Honda Accord and a Chevy Corvette are pretty similar for weight, but performance and value will make the Corvette's insurance more. Now, here's the last example. How about a Chevy Corvette and a Ford Mustang. Similar weight and performance. And, for the sake of argument, lets say the 'vette is 4 years old, making the prices similar. Here's the thing, 20 year olds love Mustangs and 50 year olds love 'vettes. The 'vette is actually cheaper to insure because of the type of person who drives it, even if I'm a 50 year old buying a Mustang or a 20 year old buying a 'vette.
Here is my suggestion. Look for cars that you like. Then say if you find 2 or 3 that you are interested in, then call the agent and ask what the price would be. Even if you find a great deal on one car, the insurance could be double of another. I did this years ago when I was looking at cars and found there was a big difference in couple I was looking at. good luck
1 accident rate2 theft rate3 repair costs4 type,,,sports or economy5 you,,,your age,,driving history,,where you live,,who else lives with you and drives..your credit rateing [really],and year,, engine sizealways call insurance agent and get list of cheaper cars before buying,,,some cost 2x the others
The more powerful the car ( 2 litre is powerful 1000cc is not) the more insurance will cost you. I take it that you are a new driver and as a result your insurance will be very high anyway so you need a small low cc engine car
If the car is modified,High CC engine, sport models, the older cars seem to be lower insurancego for directline cheapest i have found yet!!hope this helps
It is based on all of the above and more. You need to speak with an agent for the best answer
With all things all equal.- Price- Color- Likeness to be stolen.- Style (sports cars cost more)
