Siberian Husky or Alaskan malamute?
first off let me start by saying that I am aware that no alaskan malamute is born with blue eyes and if they have blue eyes then they aren't an Alaskan malamute. But this is my question…me and my fiance just acquired a dog from his mother. (it was his dog too because he lived there but mainly his mother took care of it and since we are moving in together in a few shorts months we will be taking it. We are both training to be dog groomers/dog trainers so i know quite a bit about dogs but I'm pretty stumped with this one. When we first started dating when i was a freshman in high school he always said he had a siberian husky but i commented to him that his dog looked way to big and stocky to be full siberian but his father said he had papers for the dog
(which neither of us have seen) Since he is going to be living in our home i decided to take his to the vet to get him checked out and rabies shot and to have his eyes and everything checked out because he is now 11 and they weighed him and he is 94.3 lbs which is outrageous because full grown siberian males are supposed to be 60 at top weight and 70 is pushing it, but the thing is he doesn't look that over weight. You think if he was over weight he'd look like a cow(he is a little chubby but nothing to bad.) I don't have any pictures and i know that its very unhelpful but what do you suggest I do. I want to believe he is a siberian because he has all the colors and he really looks like one, but he just seems to big. Even if he was part malamute max weight should only be 85 so he needs to loose weight reguardless either way but im at a loss. Our vet didn't say anything at all but he is not the one who weighed our dog. He said his heart ears eyes and lungs sounded and looked very good but he said there was a little irritation around his eye skin so we are taking care of that now but other than that he is healthy for our age. What should we do about his weight issue?

Best Answer – Chosen by Voters If you vet has not mentioned his weight why are you worried. My Malamutes weremore than 100 lbs. and not fat. Your vet will tell you if your dog is too heavy. Some dogs are bigger than other dogs – one size doesn't fit all. Your a good mom to be concerned but just check with the vet next time you take him in. A Malamute living to 11 is a good sign he is in excellent health. Keep up the good work!
Many dogs can vary from their breed standard (the GSD standard doesn't say anything about them being over 100lbs, but you see a lot of them that big nowadays). As long as you can feel his ribs by gently pressing and running your hand along the ribcage, he is at a good weight. If the ribs are hidden under so much fat you have to really press hard to feel them, the dog needs to lose a few. I wouldn't worry about trying to bring him to any specific number of pounds.
Huskies can be that big too. Oh and to comment about the blue eye thing, that is not true. There ARE blue eyed PURE BRED malamutes. The blue eyes are just a "fault" which means they can't be shown and shouldn't be bred. Have you ever seen white german shepherds? They're still PURE BRED german shepherds, but the white fur is a fault and they shouldn't be bred even though people are breeding them anyway….
