Racism is bad, but what about hating cultures?
Prejudice shouldn't be a bad thing. Prejudice: Pre-judging. If you touch a stove when it's on and get burnt, then I won't want to touch it again. But for some reason there is a bad connotation with that word. If every time I've interacted with people from certain cultures.. or even most of the time.. I can assume that this pattern will continue. I am not surprised when a turbaned Sikh person stinks up the elevator, nor am i surprised when a crime is committed by someone that belongs to Hip-Hop culture. I don't want to talk about exceptions.. because basing all my actions on exceptions will just keep getting me burnt.
Is it so bad to assume something about someone that clearly belongs to a culture? That's what pattern recognition is for! You can't expect me to not notice traits that i dislike, and try to avoid them when possible! Why do people get all defensive when I mention this?

I'm prejudge almost everybody, but I interact with them as if there were nothing wrong. Upon getting to know them, that's when I make a final judgment as to who they are. So I don't really fear "getting burnt", I wear my oven mitts and then determine whether it's hot enough to burn me or not, u know!? But I can understand why people get defensive about it. I used to be deep in the hip hop culture, but I WAS one of the exceptions. So when people stereotype it, it somewhat offends me because me nor the people I hung around operated in the gray area. We were more of the Lupe Fiasco type, but had the baggy clothes. So I completely understand where you and others would come from, but I'm very open-minded towards people and their views, and I feel like EVERYBODY should get a chance to prove themselves before being out right judged. But yea, prejudice isn't at all bad, but when you toe the line of racism, that's where it becomes a problem.
i find the practice of female circumcision in certain cultures disturbing.
Not really, people do it everyday. The biggest myth ever told is that people discriminate against others based on "skin color". Most people discriminate against backgrounds or the culture associated with thier background. If people simply saw a white guy, theyed think one way, if that white guy told them he was Jewish..Thats when the prejudices come out (good or bad)
THIS is the problem with so many of the world's problems. If you don't like misogyny suddenly you're anti-Muslim. Don't like the scourge of illegal immigration, you're racist. Don't agree with the policies of Israel, you're anti-Semitic. Don't like some of the things China does, Sino-hater. Don't like that some world leaders steal all the humanitarian relief meant for their people? You're a Euro/Austro/Canadan/American supremacist who thinks you're better than the Third Word.
It is wrong. Sikh is a religion, so obviously not all people who follow it smell. That type of prejudice is wrong.People who listen to hip hop don't all commit crimes. I listen to it and I'm not about to go out a stab someone. You can't call being a sikh or listening to hip hop a trait that you see in people and try to ignore, because that is just as bad as basing your judgments on someone because of their colour or country.
