Is this an example of why health care costs so much…?
A kid falls and now his elbow hurts. There's nothing wrong with him, just a sore elbow and maybe a small "raspberry". His parents don't want to be accused of being bad parents (and maybe even reported by the kid's teachers), so they take him to the doctor, just in case.
The doctor knows there's nothing wrong with this kid, but he doesn't want to appear to be an uncaring doctor and lose his patients to another doctor. That will not do. And obviously, he sure as hell doesn't want to be sued for malpractice and frivolous lawsuits. So he orders tests and Xrays, subscribes powerful pain killers, the whole 9 yards.
Total cost for a mildly skinned elbow? 12,000 dollars (and one Grape sucker)

To answer your question, I don't live in a country where ANYONE would pay $12,000 to see a Dr. I know and have worked with Drs who wouldn't charge people that – they would just treat them for free. And my gf's daughter when she was young banged her shin, and her hubby didn't want to take her to the Drs, and her daughter was carrying on and crying really badly. I happened to go over there, took one look at her and her leg and told them to get her to the Dr and/or hospital. It turned out she had osteomyelitis – if they had waited 'to save money', she would have lost her leg – not COULD have, she would have. She spent weeks in hospital on massive IV antibiotics, and there was some talk of even amputation. I certainly wouldn't be compromising anything for children's care; remember, children can't tell you what they are feeling correctly most times or they are too young. I do agree health care is spiralling out of control, but I as a health professional would not be charging anyone anything to assess them. I do agree u don't have to run to the Dr for everything, but if a child looks/feels unwell, is constantly crying or is the opposite – very quiet, pale, lethargic u should be going to the ER/ED. As I said I would get a child checked no matter what.
