Is my cartilage piercing infected?
Two weeks ago, I got my cartilage pierced for my 18th birthday. Lately the skin around the piercing has gotten sort of flaky and looks almost like a sunburn peeling. The area is slightly red and warm to the touch, and it hurts when I touch it. These all sound bad to me but I'm not sure if its infected or just a normal thing – I hear that it usually hurts for several weeks after a piercing. I got it done with a needle at a professional parlor (hoop earring, not stud) and have cleaned it twice a day with the ear care solution religiously, as one of my other lobe piercings got infected last year after I didn't clean it enough. Does this sound like an infection? If it is, what should I do? I really don't want to remove the earring, it hurt so much to get I don't think I would be able to do it again. Should I have done anything differently?

No, it doesn't sound infected. If it was infected, there would be greenish pus, it would be unbearably painful and hot to the touch. What is sounds like is you are overcleaning it. All you need to do is use a warm sea salt soak 5-10 minutes day. (1/4 tsp. sea salt to 8 ounces of water). If the solution they gave you is H2Ocean or some similar saline solution, that is just fine too.Since you went to an actual piercer, definitely go back and ask him/her for advice. Cartilage piercings are difficult to heal and take 9-12 months. Source(s): I have 13 piercings, including 2 cartilage piercings (an industrial)
Your piercer is wrong. You shouldn't use ear care solution. You should clean your ears with a saline solution. You can make your own. What you need to do: Mix one cup of water with 1/4 teaspoon of non iodized sea salt. Get a cotton ball and soak your piercing in the solution. Rinse your piercing with water to remove residue. Do this two or three times a day. Continue cleaning your ears with the solution until your piercing has been healed.
