Is it illegal to have car insurance from Florida if you live in New York?
I'm a new driver and was interested in getting car insurance through my grandmother's policy in Florida, I have a mailing address out there and visit Florida once a year, but live in New York.

Best Answer – Chosen by Voters If you did what you are proposing, you will not be covered in an accident when they find out you don't live in Florida. You could also be charged with insurance fraud and could go to jail. You must buy insurance where your legal official residence is.
This action would be considered a material misrepresentation by your insurance company. A claim would likely be denied.
