How should my girlfriend care for her tattoo?
My girlfriend got a tattoo I think about a week or so ago. It's on her upper right back area, and it says "Jesus Lives" in cursive writing. Around a few of the letters (mainly the "i" and "v" in "lives") are some redness, which I believe is a sign of it starting to get infected. I got a tattoo when I was 13 on my upper right arm, and it started to get infected. I remember it was only starting to get infected before my sister took it over and did her magic on it (she has 15+ tattoos), but I don't remember what I did when she wasn't around to care for it. I'm nearly nineteen now, so it was about five years ago. I have a few questions on how to care for it.
1. What are the signs of a tattoo that is healing properly?
2. Is there anything I can do to help her, besides put the neosporin on her back where it is?
3. Is it okay to peel at it when it gets all crusty and stuff, or should I just leave it?
4. She said it itches a lot, and I keep rubbing it instead, so her skin doesn't get damaged, is this okay?
5. Is hemp lotion good for tattoos?
*Note: It's not that serious to the point where she needs a doctor, please don't suggest that.
Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much, Y!A community.

well i was told by me artist to not put neosporin on it because it will fade the tattoo away just put some unscented lotion for very sensitive skin on it when it look like its getting dry and he gave me some great stuff called after inked and it worked wonders i would just put that on a few times a day and a little later i started with the lotion, but do NOT peel at it because that will take the ink away and you will have to get it retouched the scabs will fall away and it will stop peeling and don't scratch it i was told if it itched a lot just lightly smack it and i don't know how good hemp lotions are for tattoos the lotion i used was like vaseline intensive care or something of the sort and my tattoo healed up very nicely Source(s): have a tattoo
Bacitracin ointment is generally the recommended antibiotic ointment for tattoo care, rather than triple-antibiotic creams such as Neosporin. I believe the triple-antibiotic creams are more likely to pull the ink out of the tattoo. Some shops formerly (and some still might, depending on the inks they use) recommended bacitracin ointment for the first two weeks for care … when I got my tattoo about a month ago, they recommended against using this ointment unless I had some type of infection, instead, for regular care, they suggested a moisturizing lotion such as Lubriderm. Do not peel at the tattoo or scratch it … if you keep it well moisturized, that should help eliminate the itching. I also found that for washing, a nice moisturizing soap like a milk and honey formula worked wonders for eliminating the itch!
And her artist didn't go over aftercare because……?No, redness is not an automatic sign that it's infected. It's probably just healing or irritated. You should NOT be using neosporin, it's not necessary and delays healing by keeping the tattoo from breathing and pulls out the color. NEVER peel ANYTHING from a tattoo. Itchiness is normal for healing, do not scratch it, light slapping is find, rubbing isn't really the best either. The ONLY care she needs is to gently lightly wash it once a day in the shower and ONLY use a thin layer of dye free, fragrance free (not unscented) lotion (luberiderm being the usual favorite) after the shower and when ever it feels dry.
