How often is too often for washing my dog?
She is a golden retriever with sensitive skin (it gets itchy really easily). She's about 10, and I just started taking care of her (she was majorly neglected by my previous landlords). She STINKS after about 3 days…I have been washing her every 2 weeks, but am wondering if I can bathe her every week instead.

Best Answer – Chosen by Voters Do not bathe your dog too often because that will dry out the skin, deplete healthy oils from the coat and skin, and lead to scratching and irritation. Frequency is largely dependent on the breed and activities of the dog. Dogs who spend a lot of time outside or engage in outdoor activities that expose them to dirt, bugs and/or debris typically require more bathing, perhaps every 6 weeks or more frequently. Some groomers recommend bathing double-coated breeds only about 3 times a year and suggest that smooth-coated dogs can go a lot longer between baths than can curly-coated breeds such as poodles. Too frequent bathing can cause the coat to soften and reduce its insulating qualities. Source(s): http://www.paw-rescue.org/PAW/PETTIPS/DogTip_Shampoo.php
You can bathe her once a week without any problem. Unless you are bathing her in a harsh shampoo you will not dry out her coat or her skin because it is more oily and waxy than human skin. You might want to try using a vinegar rinse or a baking soda shampoo to keep the odor down.I'm a groomer and have had dogs come in as often as twice a week for medicated baths as prescribed by their veterinarians. If you can bathe injured or damaged skin that often with medicated shampoos, some of which are designed to removed flaking skin, you can certainly bathe healthy skin once a week.I also have dogs that come in once a week just for a regular bath and brush and they do not have any problems with dry skin or coat. I can promise you that show dogs, except those whose coats should be harsh, are usually bathed once a week, and you won't find coats in better condition. Those of you that think bathing frequently is detrimental should provide your source(s). I asked this question a while back and everyone told me no more then a month some one even told 4-5 times a year. If you have a dog like mine she may be allergic to grass and developed something called seborrhea which causes dandruff and an oil that is not common in a dogs natural oil and will cause the dog to smell as soon as 3 or 4 hours after a bath. I bought a shampoo sold at your local petco called Sentry HC Dermasphere Medicated Shampoo with Dermaspheres it is safe to wash the dog with this once a week because it does not strip all the oils out of the dogs fur and helps dermatically with the itching, licking biting and smell. I also give my dog one benadryl to help with her allergies prescribed by my vet. And a omega-3 vitamin to help with her natural oils in her fur. If it isn't a grass allergy it might be a grain allergy. I made my dog some homemade food for 2-5 months to rule out the grain allergy because tests at the vet can produce a false negative or false positive.
Once a month and if she is dirty in between baths use dog wipers or a damp washcloth and brush her coat. you should bathe it every three weeks, if the sensitive skin gets worse then you have to take her to the vet. my dog had the same problem and my vet gave me some pills to give to my dog shes fine now. i take her a shower every three weeks.hope this helps. Source(s): own experience.
If she starts to stink again go to the vet and get a scraping she sounds like she has a skin infection Source(s): that is what happened with my rescue dog had an odor and bathed him and in no time stunk again took to vet had a skin infection
Sound like a skin problem and frequent bathing is going to make it worse not better. Schedule her for a Vet appointment and find out what is causing the smell and the itching. Thank you for taking this dog.
While dogs don't require daily scrub downs like we do, they do need regular baths–but just how regular depends on several factors, such as the dog's environment and type of coat.Check this link for some general guidelines:http://lnk.nu/dogtime0o0com/s0t.html
its naturall if you bath her about twice a month or so or just tank a wet hand towel and rub it around her body. like when she goes outside wipe her with a wet towel so the scent will go away or maybe try out a couple of choices of shampoo Source(s): -star-
It's best to do it every month or so. I don't bathe my dog unless he stinks or is dirty, the natural oils in his coat and skin will be stripped otherwise.
They say that to much bathing of dogs can strip the coat of its natural oils, and you may make the skin much worse by bathing far too oftern frequent brushing may help!
its never too much to bath a dog. its good if you wash him twice a week. and go to the vets for taking care of the itches
A trip to the vet's office is in order. There is a reason that she's itchy and smelly.
