Best Answer – Chosen by Voters There are two factors in auto insurance. The legal residence of the owner of the vehicle, and the garaged location. For example, I can have a car that I keep at a vacation home, and the insurance cost will be based on that location. To register your vehicle in MD, and get insurance there, you will need to have a MD driver's license and a residence in MD. The car will need to pass MD state inspection, and you will have to pay tax on the book value. (6%)In DE you will need the license, you will have to take the car to be inspected at the state inspection facility, and pay title and tax.If you are trying to avoid the high cost of NY insurance, you can not do so legally and keep the car in NY Source(s): 29 years in the auto business
In order to get out of state insurance on your car you will need to either a) move out of state, get residency, change your license and registration to that state, then get insurance, orb) have an out of state friend be willing to allow you to use their address to register the car in their name and using their address for the car. You will need to keep going back to that state to have the car inspected every year and maintain the registration.Plus you will need to HOPE that neighbors don't care that your car shows out of state plates and make a simple phone call to DMV or the police. By law in pretty much all states, you are required to maintain in-state plates and registration after a certain amount of time (usually 30 days) unless you are in another state due to military, temp job, or college. It may not sound fair, but a lot of NY residents have no choice but to pay obscene insurance rates. Trying to get around the system by getting out of state tags is at the least unfair.
You cant buy insurance in any state or address you like. It has to be bought and the address used for the state and town and address the car is registered in.(where you live) Unless you want to commit insurance fraud. And when they find out you will get canceled or they will deny a claim and cancel……….md
Move to one of the other states, then buy insurance in that state. Otherwise, you are committing insurance fraud.
