There is no such thing as an "International Driver Licence" as such. He has to have a licence from his home country, and the IDP is only good as long as that licence is good. It is the same number and class, and translates the licence into 8 languages. If he is visiting you, and drives your car occasionally, he will be covered, so long as he has, in his possession, both the international and home country licences, but he cannot get insurance in his name unless he is a BC resident, in which case he then has to get a BC driver licence. If all he is carrying is the international card, he cannot drive any car, because it is not functional by itself. Source(s): I am a licenced insurance broker, registrations agent, and driver licence agent.

Having visited BC (flew into YVR) I rented a car from Discount Car rental. If he is renting on a Gold Visa/Mastercar, his credit card will provide insurance, or he can pay the $15-20 a day and purchase the CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) and be covered that way. He should also check with HIS insurance company if he can add "rental car" as an option on his insurance, that way when he rents a car, it is covered by his own auto insurance coverage.
