Has anyone else gotten Convenia for skin/abscess conditions?
A stray cat I'm caring for was given a shot of Convenia for one ear abcess and a slight neck wound 5 days ago. He was also neutered at that time. The shot did work for him fortunately, the healing of his skin is on track. Although the side effects: including extreme lethargy, decreased appetite and diarrhea or soft feces are increasing and becoming extremely concerning. I love the idea of no mess, one simple injection that lasts two weeks. This is one of best advance in Vet science for years…there just wasn't a warning to watch to make sure he seemed to be getting better and not worse.
Has anyone has similar experiences with side effects to this antibiotic ?

I haven't used it yet, but my doctor says that we will be going to use it in the future to prevent my cat from getting irritated by frequent pilling. From what I have read, Convenia is actually supposed to have less side effects than other oral antibiotics. Most antibiotics that I am familiar with have the side effect of diarrhea/soft stools. It happens with every course of oral antibiotics (Clavamox) that my cat gets.Lethargy could be a symptom of his infection and his surgery as much as the antibiotic. This has not happened as a result of antibiotics in my cat.Decreased appetite can also be a symptom of the surgery also.5 days after the surgery, however, he should be returning to normal. Especially for a neuter. Perhaps he is having some reaction to the antibiotic. I would see if it starts to get better in the next 2 days, and if he isn't better on Thursday, call the vet and see if anything can be done to alleviate his symptoms. It generally isn't a good idea to wait until Friday because they tend to be very busy days at veterinary clinics.
A couple of my cats have had the injection it is wonderful. No meds to give for 14 days. I has work with no side effects in my cats. It is more expensive but well worth it when you have an animal who is very hard to give oral medication to. The down side to Convienia once it is mixed it has to be used within 28 days. Mixing one vial can do up to 10 cats and the cost of one vial is over $300. at least that what it was over a year ago. R P CAT
