Best Answer - Chosen by Voters If you are underage ( a student) and living in your Dads household, you must be listed on his policy. Even if you are not listed tho, the insurance, by law, must cover you but if you have an accident they will cancel your Dad in a heartbeat. If you are not a member of Dads household, and you drive his (or anyone elses) insured car, with permission and a valid drivers license, you are covered. (there are some rare exceptions)

If you live with your dad, then you need to be a listed driver. If you do not live with him, and you are not a regular user, you do not have to be listed as an additional driver. Same goes with borrowing a friend's vehicle. In most cases, if you have permission to use the vehicle and you are not a regular user, you will be covered. Source(s): Claims - 21 years.

It's not specifically illegal, but if you're not listed on his policy, and you live in his house, it's insurance fraud if you drive his car. AND, you're driving uninsured. So your girlfriend is mostly right. Source(s): agent, 21+ years

It would depend how your dad's insurance reads. In most cases the one that borrowed a car has to have a driver licence. And the insuarance will cover most user of the car. Your dad is the main driver on the insurance. Source(s): General knowledge
