Do certain types of car insurance cover me only in a local area?
My mom just told me that I'd have to get a ride to st. Augustine rather than just drive myself because my insurance won't cover me if I get into an accident over there. Personally I think she's lying to me to keep me from driving far away because she thinks ill crash her car. But her paying 2000 dollars every 6 months for insurance is definitely telling me she's lying about local coverage.
Do certain insurance companies only cover you in your local area?

Best Answer – Chosen by Voters She's lying, yes, but if you did get into an accident far away your insurance will be revaluated because they'll no longer buy the whole I-only-use-it-for-work-and-school thing.
Hello, I suspect you are correct about the insurance. I have never heard of "local car insurance". You don't say how old you are. It is possible that your Mom would simply worry about your safety more than the condition of the car. $4,000 a year for insurance is an astronomical amount! If Mom is willing to go to this great expense to keep you insured, I think you, in turn, can respect her wishes, whatever they are….. I don't mean to sound sassy but Mom deserves a hug. Well, it's your mom's car, and if she doesn't want you driving it out of town, you have no choice but to respect that and do what she wants done. But to answer the question, no, insurance will cover you and the car no matter where you drive it.If I were you, I'd be glad she is paying to cover you, and allowing you to drive locally, and just say "Yes ma'am" and get a ride.
