Difference between liability insurance and comprehensive car insurance?
When I hit another car and if I have liability insurance the insurance company is going to pay for the other guy's car repair if it is my fault. If it is the other guy's fault his car insurance company is going to pay me for repair. Then why do people take comprehensive car insurance?
If I hit a wall or tree then it may help, but it happens very rarely.

Liability, is when you damage someone else's something – car, house, tree, body, whatever.Comprehensive, is if your car is stolen, catches on fire, hits an animal, has a tree fall on it, gets broken glass.Collision, is if you hit the wall or tree, or something hits you – like an uninsured car.Don't count on the other guy having insurance to pay. Uninsured motorist rates vary by state, from 5% to 25%, depending on which state you are in. Also, if he's got minimum coverage, and hits more than one car, it's very likely that he doesn't have ENOUGH to cover all the damage to all the cars, so you'll only get part.
If your car is stolen…that's covered under the comprehensive coverage. So is wind or sand damage. These are just a few examples of claims under comprehensive coverages that would not be covered by somebody elses insurance or your own liability coverage. Get a copy of your policy contract from your carrier. It will tell you what is covered and/ or excluded under all your coverages. If you hit a wall or a tree, the damage to your car will be covered under your COLLISION coverages. Not your comprehensive coverage. You would probably have to pay your deductible. If there is damage to the wall or the tree and neither belonged to you, that would be covered under your property damage coverages. Source(s): I am a claims adjuster
You're actually a bit mistaken… You're THINKING of "collision coverage", but you're saying "comprehensive". The two are completely different. Comprehensive covers your vehicle for losses resulting from incidents ***other than collision***. For example, comprehensive insurance covers damage to your car if it is stolen; or damaged by flood, fire, or animals. Whereas collision coverage will fix your car if YOU are at fault, not the other party (i.e. when you hit a wall or a tree, or another guy's car… )For example… I rearend someone. His car needs $5000 repair, my car is total'ed. My liability insurance pays $5000 (to other party), but my collision coverage pays for replacement value of my car to me.
You've left one important detail out of your analysis."When I hit another car and if I have liability insurance, the insurance company is going to pay for the other guy's car repair if it is my fault."But, who is going to pay for *YOUR* car?If you don't plan to fix or replace your car, or have enough cash on hand, then you really only need liability.Of course the other reason to have full coverage, is that a lender (if applicable) will require it.
In case their wife backs out of the damn garage with the car door open on the 2005 minivan and causes 2500.00 damage!! I love my wife, I love my wife,…..
