An important idea in Jane Treays' 'Painted Babies' is the loss of childhood innocence, the product of the corrupt beauty pageant world. Treays has shown us this through the use of verbal and visual features such as camerawork, editing, music, dialogue and narrative point-of-view.
At the very start of the documentary there is a montage of different children in the pageants accompanied with the song 'Big Spender'. Immediately we are shown that money is a big contender in these competitions. Asia Mansur's grandmother says 'we go [to the pageants] for themoneyy'. This shows us that family members are teaching Asia that money is something to value in life, reinforced when Asia says 'we really want money, money, money'. I think all kids want money, but Asia, by the age of five, had won over $10000. This seems ridiculous! Brooke Breedwell had one the same amount AND a car! What is she meant to do with a car? While Brook's mother is explaining to us the important of spending lots of money on costumes, there is a high-angle shot of Randy, Brooke's dad, mowing the lawn. This shows us he has no interest in the pageants and we are told that he would rather put the money towards Brooke's education.
The parents put an enormous amount of pressure on these girls to win. Kim drives Asia around for most of the day so Asia can practice her singing. A high-angle, tracking shot of the car suggests Asia is trapped in the car and isolated from her siblings and other children her age – simply, she is not allowed to be a kid. Brooke's mother admits pushing Brooke but then tires to justify it. She later says 'we all enjoy it', when it cuts to the shot of Brooke in the backseat of the car, yawning, looking bored. After Brooke wins, her mother and grandmother seem to take credit for the win. A shot of the reflection in the side view mirror reveals to us Brook's sullen expression, showing us that while she maybe have won, she wasn't happy about it. This reinforces the idea of parents living their dreams through their children.
The pageants seem to be very sexual, shown to us at the start when there is a shot of legs in fishnet stockings. I automatically thought this was a show girl, but as the girls hands run up her legs the camera pans up and we see it is a very young girl. It gives us the impression that while these pageants seem prestigious, they are really just trashy. The costumes the children wear are ridiculous – high cut leotards and lots of skin showing. The girls sing songs which they have no idea of the meaning, such as 'Sweet Nothings'. The pageants organiser tells us that 'we don't want them to look indecent'. She goes on to say 'with babies it's pretty hard to make them look indecent', contradicting what we see.
